Top 7 Things To Do in Kiama with Kids – Beyond the Blow hole
A lovely coastal town with plenty of charm and natural wonders, Kiama is a perfect Sydney day trip. But what will you do in this sleepy hamlet with kids other than visit the Big Blow Hole? Skip over the historic cottage museum and visitor’s center, and check out our favorite things to do in Kiama with Kids.
Top 7 Things to do in Kiama with Kids
- Walk to Little Blowhole – Yes, the big Kiama blowhole attracts much of the press and attention, but the little blowhole is even more spectacular in my opinion. It is a an easy climb down from the viewing platform, and there is space to stand so close you feel the loud “thumph” of the compressed air. Depending on the wind, you may receive a shower or light misting from the tall plume of water, regardless of where you stand. For a small taste of the Kiama to Gerringong coastal walk, trek the 5km from the Big Blow Hole visitors center. Alternately, you can drive and park at the small neighborhood lot. Either way, you will take fantastic photos without the pressing crowds = win win.
- Eat lunch at the Hungry Monkey – During our past weekend trips, we frequented this burger joint. The burgers are super juicy and flavorful, the buns light and airy, and the fries crispy perfection. Plus they have a kid’s menu, high chairs, and outdoor seating (read more of our kid-friendly suggestions here). No surprise that breakfast also exceeded our expectations!
- Browse the Starfish Education Center – Before you get your hopes up, no, this does not involve marine animals. Instead, it’s a delightful children’s shop that caters to special needs children, but also offers an array of educational toys and materials. I found this unique shop while ambling down Manning St after stuffing myself at the Hungry Monkey, and Ithe window drew me inside. I love thoughtfully curated toy shops, and Starfish is perfect if you are searching for an educational (or fun) toy for any child. They also have an online shop you can peruse here.
- Play at Hindmarsh Playground – Located in the center of town, this playground is ideal for toddlers! Walking distance from the shops on Manning and Terralong streets, the uncovered play area is well suited for younger children. There are several springing marine animals, a large surf board, bucket swings, and compact play structure. We all enjoyed pretend surfing, and the slides were short enough for CZ to navigate on her own.
- Swim in a rock pool – Summer in Kiama means swimming, and two calm rock pools are perfect for a splash. Have a play at either the Continental pool Kiama (at the north side of Black Beach Reserve), or the Blowhole Point Rock Pool, located across the road from Kiama Harbour Cabins.
- Scramble over rocks at Bombo Headlands – Returning home, stop to admire the otherworldly Bombo Headlands, north of Kiama. You can reach them by parking on Darien St, crossing the bridge, and turning left on to a gravel path/fire trail.
- Peruse local markets – Kiama has amazing local crafts, artisan food, produce on display at several times throughout the week near the picturesque harbour. We purchased honey from a nearby farm, tried on some children’s clothes, and eyed beautiful handmade jewelry. Kids will appreciate the diversity of stalls, BBQ and ice cream stands, and just playing near the water. Here are the current market offerings:
- Kiama Seaside Markets – 3rd Sunday of the month
- Kiama Produce Markets – 4th Saturday of the month
- Kiama Farmers Market – 3-6pm every Wednesday
