Maryland Crab & Co
We put the Maryland Crab & Co truck on our “food trucks to try” list a few weeks ago when we drove past Food Truck Friday in our wonderful South End. When Alyssa from Lenny Boy mentioned they would be at Common Grounds’ Cornucopia, we decided it was time to check them out. For those of you unfamiliar with the Common Grounds farm stand and the event, both work to support and raise awareness for the Charlotte Urban Ministry Center. We thought that any truck out to serve a good cause deserves a post, especially when they serve good food.
I am by no means an expert when it comes to crab cakes, but having spent a few years in Maryland, I can at least tell the good from the bad. While EZ went the more Southern route with shrimp and grits, I opted for the crab cake sandwich. As you can see from the photo, there was enough sauce, but not so much that is was overpowering. The bun was nicely toasted, and the crab cake itself was crisp on the outside, while not dried out in the center. Overall, I would not say that this is my new food truck fave, but I will definitely look for them next time I want a crab cake this side of the Potomac.
EZ found the shrimp and grits were well seasoned and sufficiently cheesy. She thought the curry powder incorporated into the seasoning offered an enjoyable twist on a traditional dish, but wanted the grits to be a little creamier. I prefer shrimp and grits with spicy andouille sausage, but overall, EZ was quite happy with her selection.
The truck was getting a lot of customers when we stopped by so we did not have an opportunity to talk to the chef for the backstory, but maybe that’s a follow-up post. In the meantime, if you are looking for another solid food-truck fix, add Maryland Crab & Co to your list.
